Square Banners 101 — Nine Years Later and I'm STILL Saying It 😂

Apparently I've Been Saying This for Nine Years… 😂

I was trying to decide what I wanted to post here first, and square banners immediately came to mind.

They're one of my little pet peeves in TEland. We have great 125×125 advertising space available, yet I still see people not using it — or submitting images that aren't actually square banners and expecting the site to make them fit.

Then I went back through my old blog and had to laugh.

I wrote “Square Banners 101” in August 2017.

Nine years later, I'm still saying the same thing. 🤣

Square banners are valuable advertising space. They're highly visible, they're great for branding, and on sites that rotate them throughout the members area, your message can show up in places a regular banner doesn't.

But a 468×60 banner squeezed into a 125×125 space isn't a square banner. Start with an image designed for the space.

And most importantly — USE the advertising you're given. If a site gives you square-banner impressions, don't let them sit there collecting dust.

Apparently this has been my public service announcement since 2017. 😂

Some things never change - 125 x 125 or button or square banner ads are a great way to help expand you brand.

Yes, I’ve experienced this many times with members too. 😂

I’ll send a notice asking them to correct their banners, and when they still don’t fix them, I usually end up doing it myself.

Sometimes I honestly think a lot of people simply don’t know how to properly insert a 125×125 square banner or even a 468×60 regular banner.

It may seem simple once you know how, but for someone who has never done it before, the sizes and setup can be confusing.

So I completely agree with you. If the advertising space is available, it should definitely be used, but the banner also needs to be designed for the space it’s going into.

Maybe we need a new Square Banners 101 refresher course for 2026. 😂
